“ALIEN SUPERSTAR” is lyric video for the Beyoncé track off of her 2022 album, Renaissance.
Through artistic research and technical engineering, my goal was to create a lyric video that encapsulates the energy of the song: a futuristic dance-pop track that fuses together R&B hip-hop sounds with influences of house and ballroom culture and themes of self-confidence and individuality. The lyric video has collectively received approximately 3,000 views through both my branded design account and the Cal Poly Art Department account on Instagram, having a playback rate of over 40%.

“ALIEN SUPERSTAR” utilizes bold colors, kinetic typography, and thematic design elements to express the futuristic dance-pop feel of the song and lyrics.
Inspired by the opening set design of Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour and the song’s introductory troubleshoot test, the lyric video uses a pixelated monospaced font with bright flashing colors of pink, green, and cyan to catch viewer attention and mimic a system malfunction. These bright flashing colors reiterate the bold and unapologetic lyrics, specifically the word “UNIQUE,” which is a major through line repeated in the song.
-
The video maintains consistency by sticking to the selected color palette, font choice, and textures while relying mostly on simple, geometric shapes to supplement lyrical references.
These shapes build upon one another, as exemplified in the chorus: a blue globe-like circle appears behind the lyric “WORLD,” two blue circles come together for the lyric “TOUCHED,” and the blue circle disintegrates to embody the lyric “DUST.”
Another notable example can be seen in the bridge when pearls travel across the screen but transition into diamond shapes. These connecting elements work together to express a cohesive aesthetic and provide a literal depiction of the lyrics on the screen.
-
While the video offers thematic cohesion, I also incorporated design layouts that differentiate sections of the song from one other. The song’s interlude features a spoken word sample of Barbara Ann Teer’s “Black Theater.” To have this part of the song distinguished from the rest of the song, the screen zooms out to show a green frame, zooming back into the scene when the interlude ends. For the outro, galactic motifs are used to launch the audience into outer space, sending them off to ascend to new heights with confidence and conviction.
